Committees

Committees form the heart of the Minnesota Electrical Association. The work of MEA is a job for the entire membership voluntarily banded together into well-organized committees. A committee is not designed to do staff work. Its function is one of study, review, guidance, direction and evaluation.


Apprentice Committee

  • Recommends authors and reviews materials for quality and accuracy
  • Evaluates suggestions and corrections for the four-year course
  • Promotes apprentice education
  • Updates the course every three years to keep it current with NEC Code changes

Building Committee

  • Inspects, evaluates, and implements needed repairs for the MEA office building

By-Laws Committee

  • Reviews and finalizes changes with an attorney
  • Presents changes to the Board for review and approval

Continuing Education Committee

  • Establishes continuing education classes
  • Plans training for electrical contractors, masters, journeyworkers, estimators, foremen, and managers
  • Suggests interesting topics and speakers for classes
  • Recommends instructors
  • Promotes attendance at MEA classes

Executive Committee

  • Consists of the elected officers of the association (Chairman of the Board, Vice Chairman, Treasurer, and Secretary), past president, two members at large, and the president of MEA
  • Implements the strategic plan
  • Acts on behalf of the MEA Board of Directors between Board meetings and present decisions to the board to ratify at the next meeting
  • Reviews, refines, and approves plan and budgets
  • Analyzes recommendations and presents these to the Board as deemed necessary
  • Annually reviews the performance of the Executive Director
  • Monitors the progress of the programs and policies of MEA to assure results are being achieved
  • Chairs the Nominating Committee

Finance Committee

  • Reviews, refines, and approves the annual plan and budget
  • Sets the policies of investment and the use of funds of the corporation
  • Keeps abreast of MEA finances and financial position and meets with accountant as appropriate
  • Sees that accurate records are kept of all money and property received, owned, and dispersed by the corporation
  • Conducts monthly review of the financial reports of the corporation and keeps the Board informed as required

Government / Legislative Action Committee

  • Evaluates survey results and feedback to determine the legislative and regulatory goals for each year
  • Recommends MEA’s positions on proposed legislation and regulations to the Board
  • Communicates as needed with the MEA staff

Insurance Committee

  • Meets on the call of the Chair, President or Executive Director
  • Reports the committee’s actions at the annual meeting of members and at regular meetings of the Board of Directors
  • Meets as needed to review proposed insurance programs

Membership Committee

  • Recruits and retains members and increases member participation
  • Maintains a “new member package” that will encourage new members to join and get involved
  • Creates and implements a plan to build a strong membership who actively participate in MEA’s activities
  • Finds new ways to recruit Product Service members to advertise and display their products and services so they reap the benefits of membership in the Association

Power Limited Council

  • Develops programs designed to retain current Technology Systems Contractor members, recruit new Technology Systems Contractor members, and increase Technology Systems Contractor member participation
  • Maintains a “new member package” that will encourage new Technology Systems Contractors to join and get involved
  • Creates and implements a plan to build a strong membership who actively participate in MEA’s activities

Product Service Council Representatives

  • Provides marketing and sales opportunities for product service members
  • Implements existing and develops new sponsorship, advertising, and direct contact opportunities for product service members to advertise and display their products and services to MEA members and the electrical industry as a whole

  • Works with OSHA and industry to promote safe practices

Strategic Planning Committee

  • Develops a three- to five-year strategic plan for the Association based on the needs of its members and presents it to the members and Board for approval
  • Uses the results of surveys, focus groups and input from industry experts to determine the effects of the economy, new developments in technology and demographics on the industry
  • Determines the staff, volunteer, and financial resources needed to achieve the goals contained in the plan
