New Laws

The 2017 legislative session will be here before you know it! You play a critical role in changes that may affect the electrical industry. It starts with which legislators are elected to represent you—get to know the candidates, and make a date to talk to them about your concerns after the election. Contributions to the MEA PAC will also ensure that your lobbying team can attend crucial events where laws and regulations that directly affect you and your business will be discussed.

On January 1, 2015, Governor Dayton signed the Responsible Contractor Bill, which ensures that all contractors and subcontractors conform to the responsibility requirements in the solicitation document for its portion of the work on the project and verifies that it meets certain criteria. MEA will continue to hold meetings with other contracting groups to discuss the refinements and how MEA can help you comply.

MEA will be watching and/or providing input on mandatory paid time off proposals, tax reform (specifically business property tax reduction) and educational opportunities for recruiting people into a career as an electrician.

New Leader

Join us to celebrate a smooth transition on December 2... After 23 years of service to MEA and the electrical industry, President Judi Rubin has announced plans to retire at the end of December. Barb will be retiring early in 2017 and John Riley retired at the first of 2016. Those three leaders represent 70 years of experience with MEA.

We are pleased to announce that Clara DeRosier, MEA’s current Executive Manager will assume the role of Executive Director on January 1, 2017. Clara has done an excellent job in her three years with MEA and will do a wonderful job leading the association. Alex Hyatt has done an excellent job of assuming responsibility for all of MEA’s sales.

Join us in recognizing Judi’s leadership, contributions and smooth transition on Friday evening, December 2 at the Hyatt Regency in Bloomington. Visit the MEA website for more details.
