Member Spotlight:

Jim Grant, Jim's Electric Company, Baxter MN

Jim Grant has been working in the electrical industry for the past five decades, and he has been a card-carrying member of MEA since 1981. Mr. Grant was kind enough to answer a few of our questions.

What part of membership with MEA has kept you coming back for over 36 years?
The desire to improve the industry, the people and the lasting friendships I’ve made.

What advice do you have for new contractors just getting into the business?
Have a business plan, think about how large you want to be. I’d recommend taking some finance and accounting courses.

Running a business is complex. My wife and I started off by ourselves and we now have over 40 employees. As you grow, the legal, moral and financial obligations to your team become greater. It can overwhelm you, or you can rise to the occasion.

Why should they join MEA?

Most electricians don’t understand what MEA does. But MEA has so much to offer, from Government Action, Education, Consulting Services and Registered Apprenticeship.

When I first got involved, I spent a lot of time at conferences listening to my mentors and obtaining as much information as possible. It’s rare to find a place in today’s world where a contractor, attorney or legislator can be found having a conversation as to how we’re going to strengthen our industry together. The opportunities that have come my way have been enormous.

What’s one of your guilty pleasures?
My favorite way to relax is by getting on my motorcycle and riding, although I often feel guilty for taking the time away from work!

What’s on your bucket list?
To spend more time with my wife Nancy, traveling and enjoying life together. Nobody does this alone, and I owe much of my success to my wife and family.
