MEA 2017 Overcurrent Protection for Registered Unlicensed Personnel

The objective of the class is to have the participant use the information that is available in the National Electrical Code (2017 edition), and be able to determine the requirements for overcurrent protection as needed in different situations, including: Standard ratings and markings, branch circuit and feeder protection, tap rules, and fuse types and uses.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to do the following tasks to demonstrate skills within industry standards:

  • Use the definitions as they pertain to Overcurrent protection as used in the NEC Article 240
  • Use a time current curve for protective devices to evaluate trip time Vs Current
  • Define Interrupting rating with reference to trip current rating and fault current values
  • Describe the effects of current limiting fuses compared to non-current limiting fuses
  • Determine the difference between GFCI and GFPE
  • Describe when to use overload protection and when it is not allowed
  • Use Art 240.4B to determine standard OC protection for conductors
  • Use Art 240 to determine which other articles affect OC protection
  • Describe the effects of selective coordination
  • Determine the requirements of multiwire circuits
  • List the requirements of the 10’ and 25’ tap rules for OC protection
  • Discuss the tap rules for transformers
  • Describe different bases for plug fuses and where they can be used
  • Identify various fuse parts and fuse equipment
  • List the requirements for marking fuses and circuit breakers and their uses
  • Define where GFCI Class A protection is required
  • Describe where fault current is needed and where it is labeled
  • Identify where overcurrent protection of different types are needed for motor protection
  • Use Art 430 to determine motor overcurrent protection sizes
