MNOSHA Safety Grants
The MNOSHA Safety Grant Program offers contractors a practical way to cut the cost of critical safety upgrades in half. Eligible uses include:
Installing fall protection, machine guarding, or dust control equipment
Purchasing new safety equipment with training
Covering tuition or certification for safety-related education
Paying for ongoing maintenance contracts on safety systems
To qualify, projects must be based on a hazard survey or recommendation from a safety professional (MNOSHA consultation, insurance rep, or private consultant). The program requires a
50/50 cash match
— for example:
$8,000 project = $4,000 grant + $4,000 company share
$20,000 project = $10,000 grant (max) + $10,000 company share
NEXT STEPS
1. Do a 60-second eligibility check
MN employer in business 2+ years
At least one employee (W-2)
Workers’ comp coverage in place MN Dept of Labor & Industry
2. Get a written hazard survey/recommendation (required)
Secure a brief, written hazard survey that points to the fix you’re proposing. Qualified sources include:
MNOSHA Workplace Safety Consultation (free), MNOSHA Compliance, your insurance underwriter (or their loss-control rep), a private consultant, your in-house safety committee (with minutes), or the Assigned Risk Plan. MN Dept of Labor & Industry
3. Define your project + gather vendor quotes
Your spend must tie directly to the survey’s recommendations. Eligible costs include:
Purchase & installation of safety/health equipment
Training tied to purchased equipment
Tuition reimbursement (safety-related)
Operating/maintenance costs of safety equipment
Property purchase/rental if needed to meet the survey criteria
Not covered: automobiles, weapons, or personnel costs like wages/benefits.) MN Dept of Labor & Industry
4. Plan your budget (50/50 match)
This is a dollar-for-dollar match, up to $10,000. It’s reimbursement-based (you pay first, then get reimbursed). Invoices dated before the fully executed contract are ineligible. secure.doli.state.mn.us
5. Apply online
Submit the application; after you hit “submit,” you’ll be prompted to upload the hazard survey and vendor quotes. Identify your authorized signer and the employer contact (they’ll get all emails). MN Dept of Labor & Industry
6. Wait for a fully executed contract—then act
Do not order or install anything until the contract is signed by all parties. Once executed, you have 120 days to complete the project. MN Dept of Labor & Industry
7. Finish the project & request reimbursement
Submit the certificate of completion, invoices, and proof of payment to trigger payment. One grant per worksite every two years. MN Dept of Labor & Industry
8. Boost your odds (optional but smart)
Projects in industries currently prioritized in MNOSHA’s strategic plan may receive added priority. MN Dept of Labor & Industry+1
